A family session focused on connection over perfection

Some of my favorite images happen when everyone stops trying so hard.
When planning this session, one thing stood out during my conversation with the Magallanes family. They didn't want anyone looking at the camera. They didn't want perfectly posed portraits. They wanted the photos to feel like they had simply taken their family out into a field to play together.

Challenge accepted.

Photographed at Bells Bend Outdoor Center in Nashville, this session became one of my favorites to date. It was an early afternoon filled with direct sunlight, the kind of light many photographers spend their entire careers trying to avoid. But something about the spirit of this session called for a different approach. Instead of fighting it, we leaned into it.

The result was exactly what I hoped it would be. Laughter. Movement. Connection. Kids being kids. Parents fully present. The kind of moments that can't be manufactured when everyone is focused on smiling at the camera.

As an artist, this session felt incredibly freeing. It was a reminder that some of the most meaningful photographs come from letting go of the rules and allowing real life to unfold.

If there's one thing I hope families take away from this gallery, it's that perfection isn't the goal. The magic is often found in the chaos. The giggles between siblings. The running, the exploring, the moments that feel beautifully ordinary today but won't always be.

And for the record, I fully support skipping the "smile pretty" negotiations and ice cream bribes. Trust me. The photos are better when everyone is simply allowed to be themselves.
